St Mary’s Churchyard Bitton

Welcome to the burial records of St Mary’s Church, Bitton.

If you would like to visit the churchyard it is always open and best accessed through the gate in Church Road, Bitton, BS30 6LJ.

While in the churchyard, if you are interested in a particular grave you can locate it on one of the three maps below to establish its grave number and then, by clicking on the table of grave numbers, locate its photograph and inscription. Alternatively, you can search by surname, using the instructions below.

This page of the website includes a database of family names which show the location (where known) of the burial. There are over 17,000 burial records dating back to 1572. Use the spreadsheet (see step 1 below) to search for the family name. Photographs of gravestones and details of any inscriptions are available for burials which have gravestones.

To search by family name

Step 1: Search the spreadsheet under the family name by clicking on the first letter of the surname on the boxes below. Make a note of the grave reference number which is listed in the ‘Grave’ column of the spreadsheet.

Step 2: Click on the ‘Table of Grave Numbers’. Select the grave number from the table (by clicking on the number of the grave). This will open a file showing a photo and a transcription of the gravestone, where available.

Some of the grave inscriptions and  burial records have no legible surname of the person buried. This file holding all the burial records may be of use. Click on the button ‘PDF’ to search the database by first name, age, year of death or grave number.

St Mary’s churchyard maintenance is carried out voluntarily by members of the congregation and local community, but it is costly to maintain. Please consider a small donation to help with maintenance costs. Please us the link here: Churchyard
